Our latest series, Inspired by Grassroots Stories: Community Architectural Advocacy, returns this Wednesday with the preservation organization, Preserving East New York (PENY). Moderated by Kelly Carroll, preservation consultant, we focus on the people and groups behind community preservation efforts in this series of group oral histories.

Join us on September 1, 2021 at 6:30pm as we discuss the effects of Mayor De Blasio’s first rezoning initiative, conducted in East New York, and how it affected the residents and the physical character of the neighborhood, demolitions and losses in East New York just before rezoning and during the process, the formation of PENY,  and how the community was able to secure landmark status for one building after rezoning. Guests include founder of PENY Zulmilena Then, and members Porscha Will, Roy Frias and Farrah Lafontant.

Special thanks to the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and Pat Reisinger for supporting this series.
