Join us at the J.M. Kaplan Fund for an evening of wine, conversation, and discussion about one of our favorite topics: public space.

William “Holly” Whyte was a journalist and urbanist who dedicated the latter half of his life to the the study of cities and public space. In the 1970s, he pioneered many observation techniques that turned conventional wisdom of how we design the public realm on its head, and kicked off a global movement for public spaces for and by people.

This talk, featuring clips from Whyte’s 1980 film The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces, will bring together long-time observations of human behavior in urban spaces that have been influenced by Holly Whyte, as we continue to expand, question, and reinvent his ideas today.

The talk will be led by Phil Myrick, CEO of Project for Public Spaces. PPS is a nonprofit that was founded to build upon and apply the research of Holly Whyte’s own Street Life Project, which shifted sharply in the 1990s from observation to community engagement.
